Owens to Sacred Heart

Magruder senior Corinne Owens has made a verbal commitment to play college basketball at Sacred Heart (Conn.) University. The Division I school, which plays in the Northeastern Conference, made the NCAA Tournament this year, losing in the opening round to eventual champion Maryland.

The 5-foot-9 Owens, a three-year starter at wing, averaged 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals as the Colonels went 11-13 this season.

“It’s a good fit,” said Magruder coach Tim Hobbs. “They like her athletic ability. They see her at [shooting guard].”

With more than 1,000 points, Owens is Magruder’s all-time leading scorer (boys or girls). She chose Sacred Heart over South Carolina State, Binghamton, and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
