Czech 4, U.S. 2: Winners, losers, and indifferent

The score tonight didn’t matter, or did it? The final U.S. roster for the 2010 World Cup will be announced in 14 and a half hours.

Winners

Clarence Goodson — He’s going to be remembered more for helping create both U.S. goals with his height in the box on set pieces than he will for his defensive lapses.

Stuart Holden — Sent in the corner kicks that created both U.S. goals, and put forth a solid effort. Tired in the end, but dangerous and active throughout.

Herculez Gomez — Take your chances, son, or something like John Harkes would say. Simply impossible to ignore as a super sub in South Africa.

DaMarcus Beasley — Has official put last year behind him. Could be Mr. Redemption when he returns to South Africa.

Losers

Oguchi Onyewu — The payoff for betting on a Peter Crouch hat trick on June 12 just went way down.

Heath Pearce — Epitomizes the depth crisis along the back line.

Sacha Kljestan, Alejandro Bedoya — Not nearly impactful enough, which isn’t exactly a surprise.

Indifferent

Brian Ching — Always works hard, that’s never been in doubt.

Jose Torres — Could’ve played his way off or onto the final 23-man roster. Who knows.

Maurice Edu — Deserves to be among the winners tonight given how well he played at center midfield. Now, is he a worthy last resort at center back? Not so sure.
