Tyler Wingo of Fairfax made a 30-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the 17th hole and went on to win the AJGA Junior at Kingsmill by one stroke Thursday in Williamsburg. It was the first AJGA victory for Wingo, a senior at Paul VI, who finished sixth in the event last year.
Wingo emerged from a field of 107, which included players from 21 states, Canada, and Italy. He shot a 5-under-par 67-68-73 – 208, edging Evan Russell of Essex Junction, Vt. (69-71-69 – 209), who entered the final round trailing by five strokes, but was tied going into the final two holes.
“I putted well today. I made quite a few comeback putts from four and five feet,” Wingo told the AJGA. “And obviously the birdie putt from off the green on No. 17 was huge.”
Wingo had the best score in the field in Tuesday’s opening round (68), when he played the final 16 holes in 4-under, and tied for the best score in Wednesday’s second round (67), when he made seven birdies.
