Nice debut for Brewer

Playing her first and last event on the American Junior Golf Association was no sweat – the oppressive heat notwithstanding – for Westfield senior Shabril Brewer. When play in the AJGA Junior at River Creek was halted twice by storms on Thursday, the final round was cancelled, leaving second-round leader Brewer (72-71 — 143) a champion in her only AJGA tournament.

After an opening-round roller-coaster ride on the back nine, where she made three birdies, two bogeys, and a double bogey, Brewer was steady on Wednesday, playing a stretch of 15 holes without a bogey, while making three birdies.

Brewer won by two strokes over Samantha Wagner of Clermont, Fla., who shot 74-71 – 145. Brewer’s former Westfield teammate, Sara Stanley (75-72 – 143) tied for third. Stanley will play at James Madison University this fall.

In the Boys Division at River Creek, Zheng Liang of Bradenton, Fla. also got his first AJGA victory, carding a 66-70 – 136, good for a two-stroke win over Centreville High senior Noori Hyun (70-68 – 138).
