Three keys to the game
1. Win the ground game » That means on both sides of the ball. The Giants’ defensive line gets the publicity, but the offensive line is excellent as well — especially when it comes to run blocking. If the Redskins allow New York to run the ball, it will lose. Conversely, the Redskins must establish the run. This is true in every game, but particularly when facing a defensive line that can rush the passer like the Giants.
2. Protect Jason Campbell » The Giants’ defensive line is talented and versatile. Their pressure, and the threat of it, produces offensive mistakes. And the key to Washington’s season is protecting Campbell. The pressure will occur; it just can’t be constant. Clinton Portis’ ability to pass protect is vital as the Giants will blitz as well. This will be a monster test for both tackles. Campbell has looked more confident this summer – when he has time to throw.
3. Get production from the tight ends » The Redskins need big plays downfield from the receivers. However, if they’re going to sustain drives the tight ends must play well. Chris Cooley needs to be a factor in the red zone this season. But it’s not just in the passing game. Neither Cooley nor the disappointing Fred Davis showed consistency in run-blocking this preseason. Their blocking too often turned potential five- to 10-yard gains into two or three yard pickups.
Key matchups
LT Chris Samuels » Pro Bowler is 25 pounds lighter; but will that help vs. the bull rush?
vs.
DE Osi Umenyiora » Missed 2008 with a knee injury; led team in sacks for previous four seasons.
RT Stephon Heyer » Started season opener last year and struggled. Still needs to improve on the ground.
vs.
DE Justin Tuck » Had 12 sacks in 2008; good against the run. Giants moved him around in the past.
DT Cornelius Griffin » Quietly had a strong summer; must capitalize on increased one-on-one opportunities.
vs.
RG Chris Snee » Pro Bowl guard typifies Giants blue-collar offensive line. Very smart and physical player.
State of the teams
The New York Giants enter as one of the NFC favorites to reach the Super Bowl. But they have a lot to prove after losing to Philadelphia in the divisional round last season.
The Redskins enter as a firm underdog but they’re as healthy for an opener as they’ve been in a long time. But the pressure is on Jim Zorn and Jason Campbell to produce.
Examiner predicts
The Giants are a better team. But we have a hunch (either that or indigestion); the Redskins play better with low expectations. Injuries at corner and issues at receiver make Giants susceptible.
Redskins 17, Giants 16
