In “The Next Great Depression is Here… If We’re Lucky,” Keith Blanchard says:

“I, for one, think this is an excellent time to panic. I’m strongly considering curling up in the corner over there and rocking like a freaked-out autistic kid.
“The challenges we face as a nation grow more complex every day, and every day, America’s superstrength weakens. Our financial institutions — the only corner of industry we haven’t already sent overseas — are imploding. Every day our political process grows more absurdly corrupt, while our watchdog media slumbers, dreaming of Britney. Our families are virtually all fractured; our prisons are teeming; our schools are churning out violent morons.
“How bad does the state of the nation have to get before we will be advised it’s okay to panic?”
Unfortunately, Blanchard is right about the problems Americans face, even though his call for mass panic is downright irresponsible.
But he doesn’t delve too deeply into the root causes of all these problems. Why? Because the answers are frankly incompatible with the liberal canon he and his colleagues espouse. Case in point:
“Our financial institutions…are imploding.” Rep. Ron Paul has been warning for years that the Federal Reserve’s debauchery of the currency would destroy the greatest wealth-creating system ever devised. This Paul Revere pointed out again and again that untethering money from tangible assets would inevitably create a calamity of epic proportions.
Nobody listened. Fellow members of Congress – Republicans and Democrats – dismissively referred to Paul as “Dr. No.”
But Paul was the one who predicted the Wall Street crash back in January – and had already come up with a four-point plan to restore the nation’s economy: major tax, spending and regulatory, monetary reform and the legalization of gold and silver to compete with Federal Reserve notes.
But Barack Obama, the Huffington Post’s choice for president, is calling for more government taxes, spending, and regulation – which will take the U.S. economy in precisely the wrong direction.
Panicky Americans watching their nest eggs self-destruct are forgetting that the federal government created this crisis by forcing banks to make unsustainable mortgages and then using Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to bundle the now-worthless paper to sell to unsuspecting investors. This was the biggest heist in history, courtesy of the U.S. government, but where are the headlines denouncing these government insiders – and political allies like Obama – in addition to lambasting the greedy Wall Street tycoons?
“Every day our political process grows more absurdly corrupt…” Yeah, but anybody who points out that ACORN and other groups affiliated with the Democratic Party are deliberately registering illegal aliens and felons gets slapped with a racist sticker and accused of trying to disenfranchise voters. Know what really disenfranchises voters? Voter fraud.
“Our watchdog media slumbers…” The mainstream media, which has disgraced itself by its overt support of Obama, isn’t just slumbering. It wags its tail and drools every time the Great One speaks and has willingly become a propaganda tool for this socialist demagogue who, if elected president, will return the favor by yanking out all the so-called “watchdog’s” teeth one by one.
“Our families are virtually all fractured; our prisons are teeming; our schools are churning out violent morons.” This is the predictable result of four decades of liberal social experimentation and unrelenting attacks on the very institutions that could now be shielding Americans from the circling economic wolves.
Ever since the 1960s, proponents of the nuclear family and traditional religion – both of which require sacrifice and delayed gratification for the common good – have been bullied, ridiculed and pushed out of the public square in favor of more “progressive” social attitudes that have fostered precisely the kind of vapid, narcissistic, me-first mentality Blanchard, the founding editor of soft porn Maxim magazine, now deplores.
It’s no doubt painful to watch your spoiled spawn turn into whining, grasping, scaredy-cats who want Uncle Sam to save them from their own lack of internal controls. Traditional conservatives were absolutely right when they warned about the liberal degradation of our culture and the dangers it posed to Western society. They were called religious freaks and zealots – and ignored.
But Blanchard’s longing for the moral cleansing of another Great Depression is ill-advised. We no longer have the moral backbone to survive one. The Culture of Death’s anything-goes lifestyle, which has ensnared him and most of his generation in its bony grasp, won’t let go of them that easily. There’s only one destiny awaiting a civilization so decadent that it fights more fiercely for the right to kill its own children than for any other cause: decay, collapse and slavery.
