St. Frances seniors sign

At St. Frances Academy, championship programs breed major Division I basketball talent.

St. Frances seniors Sean Mosley and Kandice Green, who between them have won four private league titles, signed their letters of intent Wednesday to accept scholarships to play in college.

Mosley, a 6-foot-4 guard who verbally committed to the Terrapins in August, made it official in the chapel of the Baltimore City private high school. Mosley, who averaged 24 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals last season, will join Baltimore-area players and Maryland freshmen Dino Gregory and Braxton Dupree, in College Park next season.

“We were always against each other on the court. Off the court we were best of friends,” Mosley said of his soon-to-be teammates. “I think it?s a big advantage for Baltimore guys to go in and play at Maryland since it?s a local team.”

Green, a 6-foot forward, will suit up for Seton Hall next year.

“I felt comfortable there,” Green said. “Coach [Phyllis] Mangina reminds me so much of [St. Frances coach Jerome] Shelton. She?s so laid back and I love that. The basketball is great and I?d love to play in the Big East. Who wouldn?t want that?”

Green is the sixth St. Frances product to play in the Big East, following Melba Chambers (Georgetown), Kortni Webb (Pittsburgh), Jakia Ervin (Syracuse), Angel McCoughtry (Louisville) and Mi-Khida Hankins (Providence).

She said she turned down scholarship offers from Western Kentucky, James Madison and Virginia Tech. But before Green plays for the Pirates, she wants to help the Panthers win a sixth straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title this winter.

Green, who averaged 14 points and 15 rebounds last season, will likely play power or small forward with the Pirates, but Mosley likely will shift from a wing player to guard for Coach Gary Williams? Terrapins.

“I?ve got to work on my handling and my jump shot a little more so I can start right away,” Mosley said. “My whole focus is trying to win.”

Mosley turned down several schools, including Syracuse and Florida State. His focus now is guiding St. Frances to a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference title this winter.

“This is the most talented team we?ve had since my freshman year,” Mosley said. “I think we?re going to win everything. That?s what my team?s mindset is right now.”
