Going to extremes at Royal St. George’s
With 33 players in the clubhouse, the best 18-hole score today, in the rainy, windy third round of the British Open, belongs to the oldest player in the field, 61-year-old Tom Watson (72), a score later matched by Trevor Immelman. The highest score of the day belongs to the youngest player in the field, 19-year-old Jung-Gon Hwang (83).
Watson shares the lead in the clubhouse with former Masters champ Immelman at 4-over-par. He won his fifth British Open and last of eight major championships at Royal Birkdale in 1983, eight years before Hwang was born.
How tough are the conditions today? The average score of the 33 who have completed is 76.3.
