Murphy, Thomas pace Gilman

Gilman?s boys? lacrosse team grabbed another A Conference victory in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association on Friday, besting St. Mary?s 13-10. The victory puts Gilman (5-2/8-4) behind first-place Boys? Latin and second-place Severn in a third-place tie with St. Paul?s.

The victory over St. Mary?s could not have come at a better time for the Greyhounds, who suffered their second conference loss to Loyola, 13-7, on April 18.

Gilman head coach Brooks Matthews said that Loyola looked sharp in the game. “They needed a win, big time,” Matthews said. Before that loss Gilman was on a five-game winning streak.

“The guys have been getting better every game,” Matthews said. Two players that have been integral to the Greyhounds success this season are senior midfielders Sean Murphy and Steve Thomas.

“They are both tough kids who do a lot of things well for us,” Matthews said. Both players take face-offs for Gilman and both play on the team?s man-down defense.

“Sean?s motor is always running,” Matthews said of Murphy, who is second on the team in ground balls, with 39. Before the St. Mary?s game, Thomas had a goal in the previous two games.

Murphy and Thomas are not the Greyhounds? team captains, but their experience and skill allows them to be leaders for the team, Matthews said.

Matthews said that Murphy and Thomas are more than just lacrosse standouts forGilman. Murphy has played three years on the varsity lacrosse team and three years on the soccer team for Gilman.

Thomas was a three-sport varsity athlete, playing football in the fall and basketball in the winter. Matthews also said that Thomas was a tremendous student and was involved in the upper school musical.

Murphy and Thomas will both be going on to college next fall, and Matthews said that they both plan to continue with lacrosse. Murphy is going to Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster Pa., and Thomas will attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.

Gilman has three games left this season, including a home game with second-place Severn on Tuesday. “We need to continue to make progress and put another winning streak together,” Matthews said.
