Palace open for challenge

The front office with Crystal Palace USA makes it very clear: Tonight?s U.S. Open Cup match is not a friendly affair.

“It is very, very important for our club to do well,” Palace sporting director/co-coach Jim Cherneski said. “We would like to advance into an MLS game. It?s a meaningful match; it?s not a friendly.”

Palace will travel to play the Ocean City (N.J.) Barons of the Premier Development League in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tonight at 7:30.

With a win, Palace would play the winner of their United Soccer Leagues Second Division rival, the Harrisburg City Islanders, and the U.S. Adult Soccer Association?s Aegean Hawks. A second-round win would pit Palace against a Major League Soccer club.

But Palace isn?t looking past the first round.

“Any team in this can come out and beat us if we don?t take care of the physical aspects of this game,” Cherneski said. “We have to prove ourselves every match.”

The Barons play in a league typically made up of college all-star clubs, allowing NCAA soccer players the chance to play professional-level soccer in the summer without handing over their fall eligibility.

They previously played in the USL Second Division, and Cherneski is familiar with the club?s management.

He?s also familiar with their home field, Carey Stadium, which he said is in a nice setting, but has a bumpy surface.

“It doesn?t necessarily play into our style,” Cherneski said of Palace?s ground-based offensive attack. “But we?re prepared to deal with what we have to deal with to win.”

Palace enters the game with a 2-4-2 mark in USL Second Division play.

The team hasn?t lost in its past four games, earning two wins and two ties after a four-game losing streak to open its inaugural season. In the past four games, Palace has allowed just one goal, outscoring the opposition, 5-1.

“I think the team is very confident,” Cherneski said. “I think the key now is that we realize that we haven?t achieved anything yet.”

Coming off Saturday?s 1-0 win, and with a 7 p.m. game this Saturday, Palace is presented the issue of a mid-week game.

“We?ll probably have to use more of our players,” Cherneski said.
