Shooting a 64-74 – 138, former teenage golf phenom Ty Tryon qualified for the U.S. Open Monday at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. Tryon, now age 26 and a husband and father, made nine birdies and one bogey in his scintillating opening round. In the afternoon, he recovered from a double-bogey 7 on the front nine, getting up-and-down for par on five of the last nine holes.
“That’s the best thing I’ve done in golf,” said Tryon. “I’ve never played in a major.”
Among those also qualifying in the Sectionals at Woodmont were Nationwide Tour players Jason Gore (72-64 – 136), Kent Jones (66-70 – 136), Arjun Atwal (68-70 – 138), and Daniel Summerhays (70-68 – 138).
But the day belonged to Tryon, the youngest player to earn his PGA Tour card when he got through Q School at age 17 in 2001. He lasted just a year on tour, then just a year on the Nationwide.
“Yeah, I’ve been through a lot, but I’ve seen the world, done a lot of things other people will never experience,” said Tryon. “I don’t look back.”
