Future Terps hit Comcast

If Gary Williams wants a glimpse at his incoming freshman class, all he has to do is take a short walk from his office tonight.

With a handful of the nation?s top seniors coming to town, the Maryland basketball coach can take pride in knowing that four locals will be suiting up for the Terps next season.

The 34th annual Capital Classic at Comcast Center will open with a District vs. Suburban All-Star Game, followed by the headlining Capital vs. U.S. All-Star contest.

Four future Terps are scheduled to play in the main game ? All-Examiner first-teamers Braxton Dupree (Calvert Hall) and Dino Gregory (Mount St. Joseph) for the U.S. team, and Montrose Christian (Rockville) teammates Adrian Bowie and Shane Walker for the Capital team. Dupree might not play due to an ankle injury, which he suffered Sunday.

“I think it?s a good opportunity for fans to see local guys before they go off to college, especially the Maryland flavor,” Mount St. Joseph coach Pat Clatchey said after Sunday?s Charm City Challenge, in which he coached the Baltimore team.

In Sunday?s Charm City game,Gregory, Dupree and Walker helped the Baltimore All-Stars to a 116-113 win over the U.S. All-Stars. Walker finished with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Gregory scored 11 points with seven rebounds, while Dupree added four points and four rebounds in six minutes before his injury.

While a number of Maryland recruits will get a chance to play at their future home, Towson Catholic guard and All-Examiner player of the year Malcolm Delaney will play in a quieter Comcast Center than he?ll see as he suits up for future Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia Tech.

“I played against most of those guys for the last four years, so I?m used to it,” Delaney said of facing the future Terps.

Delaney is one of three future Hokies on the U.S. All-Star roster. Hargrave Academy teammates Jeff Allen and Dorenzo Hudson will play with Delaney, while 6-foot-10 Augustus Gilchrist (Progressive Christian) will play for the Capital All-Stars.
