Who was that donning an extra-large tuxedo for Monday night’s state dinner for Ghanian President John Agyekum Kufuor? None other than baseball Hall of Famer Dave Winfield. The slugger has done work in Ghana to promote baseball (and, of course, the president enjoys any chance to talk balls and strikes).
Among those joining Winfield and his wife at the affair were former AOL chief Steve Case, Paralympian Jean Driscoll and Northern Virginia real estate investor Joe Robert. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice brought NFL Director of Operations Gene Washington, while Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao opted for her dad, Dr. James Chao, over her husband, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Vice President Cheney brought his daughter Elizabeth.
For dinner, they all enjoyed a gratin of Maine lobster, ginger-scented farm lamb, beet salad and banana coconut pudding.
Afterward, guests retired to the Rose Garden for the entertainment: excerpts from the Broadway production of “The Lion King.”
It was just the sixth state dinner during the Bush administration, in addition to three “official dinners.”
