The Redskins found someone who can help them. But exactly where he’ll help remains to be seen. They signed veteran wideout Mike Furrey Wednesday, landing a player who can play receiver, safety and return kicks. Considering they need receiving depth, particularly in the slot, he’s a decent fit.

Furrey has caught 221 passes for 2,298 yards and seven touchdowns in his seven-year career, spent with St. Louis, Detroit and Cleveland. His best season came in 2006 when he caught 98 passes for the Lions, followed by a 61-catch campaign. Here is a good analysis of Furrey, though it is from three years ago. And here’s one from last year, which talks about his rise — including a stint in the XFL.

Furrey caught 23 passes in two starts at receiver for Cleveland last season. He also started two games at safety, recording 14 tackles. He was one of three finalists for the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award (as was London Fletcher).

In 2005, he played 11 games at safety for St. Louis. He has returned kickoffs (21 for 387 yards) and punts (23 for 213). If nothing else he could help on special teams.

The Redskins cut linebacker Alvin Bowen and tight end Sean Ryan. The latter was signed in March ostensibly to be a blocking tight end, but the Redskins have added a few others at that position and he clearly was expendable. Washington also cut defensive lineman Antoine Holmes and corner Marcus McCauley.
