» Linebacker/defensive end Brian Orakpo can hurt teams in numerous ways as a rusher, which is why he should not be restricted just to end. His first sack came from a two-point stance when he beat the tight end and then the running back. He’s also nimble with his feet, able to avoid cut blocks and still get in on tackles vs. the run. The Redskins also do a good job of creating one-on-one situations with his rushes, using him on stunts with Kedric Golston or showing blitz with a linebacker. That happened one time and it froze the back, who was going to help with Orakpo. That enabled Orakpo to get the edge for a sack.
» The Redskins’ offensive line is still a sore spot and must be overhauled in 2010. Perhaps it had something to do with the turf — it was terrible because of the sod over the baseball dirt and the rain. A couple times they struggled to plant their back foot and anchor. But there were problems all over, and both tackles, Stephon Heyer and Levi Jones, had their issues. Once again, Heyer gives away plays with his stance. Just sloppy fundamentals by too many blockers; some guys lunged, others stood upright and others did both. They did well at the goal line, but they’re being helped mightily by game planning and quarterback play.

» Rock Cartwright‘s time in Washington is up. First he was demoted to No. 2 running back and, worse, he was not the No. 1 kickoff returner either, a role he’d held since 2006 until four games ago when he took over as the top running back. Cartwright has been a valuable player in Washington, but the Redskins want more explosiveness out of the kick return game. Cartwright understands the game well and, when he’s done playing, will make a good coach or analyst. We already know he’s not afraid to speak his mind.
» LaRon Landry up near the line is a good thing. Landry in single coverage vs. a back or tight end is not. Landry’s eyes are not disciplined enough to handle such an assignment, something Sean Taylor used to do well. Landry did make plays as a strong safety, including a forced fumble, and his interception highlighted his athleticism.
