Cheers & Jeers: Four rookie debuts worth mentioning

Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee » Wins the award for “Most Likely to be Anointed the Missing Piece,” but even with 127 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns, the former East Carolina Pirate’s debut doesn’t make up for the worries that Vince Young’s knee and accuracy have caused. A quick reminder: Kerry Collins, 35, is the league’s next Vinny Testaverde.

Sam Baker, LG, Atlanta » RB Michael Turner (220 yards rushing) and QB Matt Ryan (62-yard TD on first throw) stole the headlines, but Baker and the O-line paved the way. The Falcons set a team record with 318 yards rushing.

Tracy Porter, CB, New Orleans » First-round DT Sedrick Ellis was good, but this undrafted Louisiana native was great, as the Saints limited Tampa Bay to just 2-of-12 third down conversions. Porter finished with three tackles and two key pass breakups.

Matt Forte, RB, Chicago » Might as well stay down along the Bayou, as Forte, a New Orleans native, racked up the second-most yards (123) for a rookie running back in Week 1 in the last 10 seasons (Cadillac Williams had 148 yards in 2005). He’s also the first Bears rookie RB starter since — wait for it — Walter Payton in 1975.
