Hole-in-one for Navy assistant Green

It’s been a tough off-season for Navy defensive coordinator Buddy Green, who missed spring practice with complications from gall bladder surgery. But on Friday afternoon, it got a little better as Green made a hole-in-one in the 22nd annual Navy Sponsor & Media Golf Outing at the Naval Academy Golf Club.

Green, known as the best golfer on the Navy coaching staff, aced the 4th hole, which played to 180 yards on Friday.

Green used the favorite club in his bag, a 5-wood. With the shot, he won a vacation package and helped his team to a victory. Green’s foursome finished with a 9-under-par 62 in the scramble format.

Moments after Green found his Titleist 4 in the cup and let his playing partners know it was there with a fist pump, a cell phone rang from the his cart.

“That must be the Associated Press calling,” quipped Green, twice nominated for the Frank Broyles award, given annually to the nation’s top assistant.

It was the second hole-in-one for Green. The first came 20 years ago, when Green was vacationing in his home state, North Carolina. He was accompanied that day by son Todd and daughter Courtney, who was driving the golf cart.

Todd Green, now a video assistant with the Midshipmen, was on the course – though in as different foursome — on Friday.

Navy graduate assistant Kevin Edwards nearly made the biggest splash of the day. On the 7th hole, where the prize was a Range Rover for an ace, Edwards’ shot finished a foot from the hole. Edwards started at cornerback for three years for the Mids.
