When Jim Zorn was fired, few of his assistants expected to stick around. Most were right.

But three will remain on Mike Shanahan’s staff: Steve Jackson, Kirk Olivadotti and special teams coach Danny Smith. Jackson and Olivadotti have not yet had their roles defined, but are expected to continue working with the safeties and linebackers, respectively.

“We came here with coach [Joe] Gibbs to build something here and we didn’t want to leave the job undone,” Jackson said. “I’m very excited. The more you sit and talk to [Shanahan], the easier it is to see how he has those Super Bowl rings.”

Jackson and Smith have been in Washington since 2004; Olivadotti has stuck around since 2000 and now is working with his seventh Redskins coach.

Shanahan also reportedly hired Jacob Bruney to coach the defensive line. He coached with Shanahan for seven seasons in Denver. He was the defensive line coach in Cleveland (1994-98) and Carolina (1999-2001).

Also, former Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray accepted a similar position with Seattle. Bob Slowik will be the Redskins new secondary coach.

Washington must find coaches for the offensive line and tight ends.

Meanwhile, guard Chad Rinehart was arrested for misdemeanor public intoxication outside a pizza place around 2 a.m. Monday in Cedar Falls, Iowa. According to the police report, Rinehart smelled of alcohol and was swaying. He declined a breath test and was taken to jail. He was released shortly thereafter and will be arraigned next month.

In a statement, the Redskins said, “We are aware of this incident but have no further comment.”
