Since World War II, the U.S. Open has produced more winners who finished over par (21) than the other three majors combined — British Open (six), PGA (four) and Masters (three). Here are five famed over-par winners of the U.S. Open: 5. Angel Cabrera (2007, 5 over) ?»

At rugged Oakmont (Pa.), with lightning-fast greens and gnarly rough, Cabrera was one of two players who broke par in the final round with a 69 to beat Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk by a stroke.

4. Geoff Ogilvy (2006, 5 over) ?» Four of the five Open winners at Winged Foot in New York have finished over par. Ogilvy emerged after Phil Mickelson (double bogey), Colin Montgomerie (double bogey) and Jim Furyk (bogey) made a mess of the 72nd hole, each finishing a stroke back.

3. Julius Boros (1963, 9 over) » The Country Club at Brookline (Mass.) was battered by high winds, and Boros never broke par until shooting a 1-under 70 in a playoff victory over Jacky Cupit and Arnold Palmer. His score (293) was the highest to win a major in the post-war era.

2. Hale Irwin (1974, 7 over) » The year after Johnny Miller tore up famed Oakmont with a final-round 63, the USGA exacted revenge in the “Massacre at Winged Foot.” No player broke par (70) in the opening round, and Irwin never did so in four rounds.

1. Ben Hogan (1950, 7 over) » Sixteen months after suffering a near-fatal head-on collision with a bus, Hogan survived another ordeal at brutal Merion in Pennsylvania, winning in a playoff over Lloyd Mangrum and George Fazio.
