Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., took to the House floor Wednesday to comment on — of all things — the governor of Georgia’s prayers for rain.

Gov. Sonny Perdue said this week, “It’s time to appeal to Him who can and will make a difference” as the state suffers through a drought.

This was too much for Blumenauer, who called Perdue’s appeal to a higher power “ironic, coming from … a state that has no realistic plan about how it’s going to use its water resources, has no understanding of what the demands are for the work that they have in place right now. The good Lord might say, ‘Sonny, why did you have a huge artificial snow mountain so people can ski in Georgia in the middle of the summer in the middle of a drought?’ ”

The people of Georgia, through their elected representatives, couldn’t let that stand.

Later in the day, freshman Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., said, “Gov. Perdue wisely recognized that a request such as this must be made to a higher power, and I commend him for his humility and wisdom in calling on God to provide what man cannot provide.”

After citing Bible passages, Broun continued, “[Perdue’s] efforts helped unite hundreds of Georgians from all walks of life, leaders and citizens from varying faiths and denominations, races and ages for this prayer service.”

At which point Broun offered his own prayer from the House floor.

We just pray they’ll all stop.
