The 500-pound two-headed monster in the middle of the Detroit Tigers’ lineup seems to be as fierce as advertised. By acquiring Prince Fielder in the offseason and teaming him up with AL batting champion Miguel Cabrera, the Tigers put together the best power hitting combination in the majors. And it didn’t take long to prove it.
After four games — all wins — Cabrera is hitting .426 (6-for-13) with three home runs, eight RBI and five walks. Fielder has a .400 batting average (6-for-15) with two homers and four RBI.
Against two teams from the often-praised AL East — the Red Sox and Rays — the Tigers have scored 31 runs (7.75 per game).
With the Tigers’ powerful lineup to go along with Cy Young and MVP winner Justin Verlander, who pitched eight scoreless innings on Opening Day, Detroit was expected to run away with the otherwise weak AL Central.
But the way the Tigers have looked against expected playoff contenders in their first four games of the year, maybe it’s the entire league the Tigers will run away with.
