Maier is now on the field

Baltimore baseball fans will never forget Jeffrey Maier. Even if they wanted to.

Lizz Morhaim, a senior film studies major at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, is doing her part to tell another side of the story that left Oriole fans with broken hearts 10 years ago.

Morhaim, of Owings Mills, is expected to turn in her senior film project titled “I hate Jeffrey Maier” on Thursday, April 13. Maier, also a senior at Wesleyan University, is in the film: as himself.

“I was apprehensive about approaching him,” said Morhaim of asking Maier to participate in the film. Morhaim, the daughter of state delegate Dan Morhaim, D-11th, said Maier liked the script and agreed to do the film.

Lee Pender, who plays the film?s protagonist, said his character spends his entire college career trying to get back at Maier for the Oct. 9, 1996 outfield interference that helped the Yankees beat the Orioles in that American League Championship game.

Morhaim was able to get game footage from the Baltimore Orioles, but is still trying to get the permission of Major League Baseball to show her film outside of her class.

Maier also plays baseball at Wesleyan, and he had a team-high 10 RBIs with an average of .409 in his first 44 at bats this season. Maier had four hits in a doubleheader on Sunday against Middlebury. That gave him 168 hits in his college career, which tied a school record.

He was hitting .392 in games through Sunday, with hits in 15 of the team?s first 18 games this season.
