Phillip Anschutz will be honored with the National Soccer Medal of Honor and inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, according to the Hall of Fame. In a statement from the Hall of Fame, Anschutz is credited with playing a key role in “the success of MLS during its inaugural decade.”
Anschutz created AEG, an umbrella organization including Clarity Media Group, which operates the San Francisco, Washington and Baltimore Examiners. AEG has a stake in more than five MLS franchises, including four-time MLS champions D.C. United, according to AEG.
Anschutz will be presented the medal on Aug. 27, and inducted into the Hall of Fame on Aug. 28 with U.S. national players Carla Overbeck and Alexi Lalas, and 1970s all-star Al Trost.
