Top 5: Venue changes in area sports

The Washington Kastles open their new facility, Kastles Stadium at the Wharf, on Tuesday night. The new location — on the Southeast Waterfront off Maine Avenue — is an upgrade from its former site in a downtown parking lot. What are the most significant venue changes in recent area sports history? We rank them worst to best.

5. RFK Stadium to FedEx Field » The Redskins went from a Metro-accessible, intimate, rocking, parkland stadium with views of the Capitol Dome and Anacostia River to one overlooking the Beltway, Landover Mall and Raljon.

4. Cole Field House to Comcast Center » Cole had its charms — the track, the columns, the history and the reverberation. But it can’t compare to its modern replacement, where fans are on top of the action.

3. RFK to Nationals Park » Remember 2008 when Nationals Park opened to tepid reviews? Three years later the people whose opinions matter the most — the fans — have no complaints. Redskins fans might miss RFK, but few Nats fans feel that way.

2. Memorial Stadium to Camden Yards » As was the case with Cole Field House, saying goodbye to Memorial Stadium was tough. But once fans got an eyeful of Camden Yards, there were no pangs for 33rd Street.

1. Capital Centre to MCI/Verizon Center » It took a few years, but moving from the Beltway in Prince George’s County to 7th and F streets in Northwest changed Wizards and Capitals games from a night in the car to a night on the town.
