Baseball showdown
Both sides in the annual Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game are taking practice very seriously this year.
Today, the Republicans will have batting practice at RFK Stadium with Nationals hitting coach Lenny Harris, according to sources familiar with their preparation.
The game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Monday at RFK, benefiting the Washington Literary Council and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.
“I think they hit better than the Nationals already,” deadpanned the Dems’ rookie manager, Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania.
He said they started practice three weeks earlier than the GOP squad and have been out every day this week. He’s high on their new talent, chief among them freshman Rep. Heath Shuler from North Carolina. The game will be Shuler’s first competitive visit back to RFK since his stint as Redskins quarterback.
Doyle said Shuler, who will be a designated hitter, hit one 350 feet out of their practice field Wednesday.
