Langhorne stepping up for Mystics

Washington Mystics rookie forward Crystal Langhorne had her best game of the season Sunday against San Antonio, with 17 points and seven rebounds in her fourth consecutive start.

But with her locker just down the wall from veteran Nakia Sanford, who Langhorne displaced, the former Maryland standout was quick dismiss any idea that her place in the first five was secure.

“If the team needs me to start a game or two, then that’s what I need to do,” said Langhorne, who was 8-for-12 from the field.

“I think she’s one of the best players at finishing around the goal and finding her way through those small spaces,” said Mystics guard Alana Beard. “I thought she did a heck of a job.”

The Mystics (6-11) are still seeking better performances from Sanford (four points) and Monique Currie (five points), who were a combined 3-for-18 against the Silver Stars. Sanford also missed her only two free throw attempts against San Antonio, dropping to 38 percent at the line for the year.

Washington has lost five straight to Indiana (9-8), including all four games last year and a season-opening 64-53 loss in Indianapolis on May 17.
