Five to watch at the Texas Open

Matt Kuchar This might be the weakest field this year on the PGA Tour. Kuchar, the No.?15 player in the world rankings, is in a threesome with the only other players ranked in the top 50 — No. 26 K.J. Choi and No. 47 Fredrik Jacobson. Kuchar, 33, has made 16 straight cuts, including a tie for third early this month at the Masters.

Brendan Steele

The 29-year-old captured his first PGA Tour victory at TPC San Antonio last year, winning by a stroke over Kevin Chappell and Charley Hoffman. Steele tied for fifth at the Phoenix Open on Super Bowl weekend but has struggled of late, missing the cut in his last three events.

Justin Leonard

No one in the field has won more Texas Opens than the Dallas native (2000, ’01, ’07). But those were all contested at short, quirky LaCantera (6,896 yards). The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio measures a robust 7,522 yards, making it tough on short hitters like Leonard.

Johnson Wagner

He’s the only player in the field ranked in the top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings and the money list. The Virginia Tech product had a streak of success early in the year, breaking 70 in 12 straight PGA Tour rounds en route to winning in Hawaii and finishing second the following week in the Humana Challenge.

J.B. Holmes

Ranking ninth in driving distance, Holmes has the length to deal with the challenging Pete Dye/Greg Norman course, which has the heftiest set of par-5 holes on tour, measuring 602, 604, 567 and 591 yards. He plays well in Texas, tying for eighth three weeks ago at Houston.
