Westbrook on the mend

Brian Westbrook has proven what he can do when he touches the ball. There’s just one thing left for him to do: prove he can stay healthy.

The Eagles running back hasn’t done that this season, either. But that hasn’t stopped the DeMatha High graduate from posting big numbers. In seven games, Westbrook has carried 97 times for 500 yards (his 5.2 yards per carry is the best of any starting running back) and has caught 38 passes for 401 more. He has seven touchdowns and nine plays of 20 yards or more.

“When he comes out of that break, he can make you miss,” Eagles safety Brian Dawkins said. “Once he makes you miss, by that third step he’s full speed. Not a lot of guys can do that.”

The bye week allowed Westbrook to rest his knee, which sidelined him for one game.

“The swelling’s down a little bit, and it’s feeling better,” Westbrook told reporters. “I’m healthy. I just want to help this team win by touching the ball and making plays.”

Westbrook has never started more than 12games and hasn’t played in more than 13 games since 2003.

“He shows up,” said former Eagles teammate, and Redskins safety, Troy Vincent. “When he’s involved, he’s a difference maker anytime he touches the ball. He can do it all.”
