Terps have had mixed success playing on Super Bowl Sunday

Can UNC-Maryland live up to history?

With a 4-6 record on Super Bowl Sunday, the Maryland Terrapins have had mixed success. But there have been plenty of memorable games that have served as appetizers for the main course on Super Sunday. Here are the top five:

It is the worst stretch for the Tar Heels since 2002-03, when they lost five straight under Matt Doherty. Seven-foot Tyler Zeller (broken foot) is out.

5. Maryland 87, North Carolina State 80 (1977) »  Brad Davis (26 points) and Steve Sheppard (22 points) carried the Terps. Maryland also got a late boost from fan favorite Brian Magid, who came off the bench and hit four jumpers from the perimeter at Cole Field House.

4. Maryland 74, Duke 70 (1997) »  Maryland’s Laron Proffit (16 points) scored on two alley-oops in the final four minutes and Obina Ekezie wrapped it up, drawing a charging call on Duke guard Steve Wojciechowski with 2.2 seconds left at Cole.

3. North Carolina State 80, Maryland 74 (1974) »  Sensational Wolfpack skywalker David Thompson scored a career-high 41 points, hitting 14 of 20 shots from the floor, killing the Terps inside and out at Reynolds Coliseum. John Lucas and Tom McMillen had 24 each for Maryland.

2. Maryland 92, North Carolina 86 (1980) »  After losing nine straight to the Tar Heels, Lefty Driessel’s team shot 67 percent at Carmichael Auditorium behind Albert King (28 points), Buck Williams (19 points), Greg Manning (19 points) and Earnest Graham (17 points) to end the streak and trump James Worthy and Co.

1. North Carolina State 87, Maryland 85 (1973) »  On the same day the Redskins lost to the Dolphins in Super Bowl VII, D.C. fans got a double whammy. Thompson (37 points) bolted from the foul line, leaped and grabbed a rebound off a missed shot, dropping the ball gently through the hoop, his chin at rim level, with 3 seconds left at Cole Field House.
