Is there any end to the domination of female-friendly Mount Vernon Country Club? After winning its third straight Virginia Women’s State Team Match title Thursday at Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville, Mount Vernon has five championships in the event since 2000 and nine overall.
Mount Vernon, a comfortable winner over Elizabeth Manor of Portsmouth, 30-24, was led by Katie Cox (Alexandria) and Joan Gardner (Alexandria), who rolled to an 11.5-6.5 victory over Lynn Anderson (Chesapeake) and Kelly McAnally (Virginia Beach).
Reigning VSGA Senior Women’s Amateur champion Linda DiVall (Alexandria) and Kim Franks (Springfield) of Mount Vernon rallied on the back nine for a 10-8 advantage on Cyndi Carlson (Chesapeake) and Paula Stublen (Chesapeake).
DiVall credited her partner.
“Every hole – every shot – you could just see her gaining more confidence. My job was to drive the cart,” DiVall told Andrew Blair of the VSGA. “She carried the day and would not be stopped. She knew what she wanted to do with every shot.”
Also contributing for Mount Vernon were Susan Podolsky (Alexandria) and Shawn McCullough (Alexandria). They fell to Kerry Johnson (Chesapeake) and Cindy Morris (Portsmouth), 9.5-8.5, but earned lots of key points.
Local flight winners were Country Club of Fairfax (second) and Fort Belvoir (fourth).
Mount Vernon has had an impressive run in the Virginia competition, but consider their dominance of the Women’s District of Columbia Golf Association, where they have won nine of the last 11 years.
