Likable, just not so much on field

When the Redskins traded for quarterback Donovan McNabb, his new teammates were overjoyed. None of them mentioned Jason Campbell and its impact on him unless they were asked the question directly.

Maybe DeAngelo Hall‘s response to a question the other day explains why. Actually, the question had nothing to do with Campbell, but Hall came up with this response:

“You never knew which one you would get. Sometimes [he’d] look great and you’re like, ‘Well, hell, this kid can play; he’ll eventually be a player.’ Then sometimes you were like, ‘Damn. I know we didn’t get the best protection, but you could have gotten that out of there.'”

In other words, the players were like many fans: They liked Campbell and wanted him to succeed, but they, too, became exasperated.

Hall agreed that Campbell lacked a star-studded cast around him and that the lack of protection was a major detriment.

“Donovan ain’t got the best pieces around him either,” he said. “The team is relatively the same. We have more running backs. But, yeah, I mean, I don’t think nobody who watched any game last season felt like we had the best team or the best product on the field.”

There’s much debate about the offense now. Save for quarterback, it’s hard to say any spot is improved over the team that started 2009.

“We have guys healthy now,” Hall said. “During the season we might be saying the same thing in Week 10, ‘Donovan ain’t got the right weapons.’ We’re a little healthy now, so it’s easy to say we’re better than last year.”
