Najar gets official call to join Honduras under-23s

After inexplicably deciding against calling up Andy Najar to join the Honduran national team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the federation is ready to bring the 18-year-old D.C. United midfielder into the fold for the first time next week.

As first reported in Honduras, Najar was one of 21 players invited to a three-day training camp with the Honduras under-23 national team, in San Pedro Sula from July 25-27, as part of preparation for Olympic qualification, which begins for Honduras in the fall.

Because the training camp is not part of an official FIFA competition, the decision on whether or not Najar is allowed to participate will be at the discretion of D.C. United, which didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. [Update: D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper said Tuesday afternoon that the team has received no official request for Najar from the Honduran federation.]

“I’m glad the Honduran federation has taken Andy into consideration,” said Chris Megaloudis, Najar’s agent. “I know he wants to play for his country at the full and under-23 level, but this will be a conversation for D.C. United to have with Andy if they want him to go or not.”

After Wednesday’s regular season game against New England, D.C. United does not have another match until it travels to San Jose on July 30. D.C. does host Everton FC in an exhibition match on Saturday.
