Gilbert Arenas often shocks with his words, or at least leaves the Wizards wondering what he meant. This time, they weren’t shocked, or surprised. And they understood what he was saying.

Arenas told two newspapers on Saturday night that he would opt out of his contract after next season, a move designed to get more freedom and a richer contract.

“We expected and anticipated that Gilbert would elect to opt out of his contract,” Washington’s President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld said in a statement. “We understand why a player of his stature would like to be compensated accordingly.”

Arenas, a three-time All-Star, would become a free agent after next season. However, if the move is all about money, then Washington is in the best position to re-sign him. The Wizards can then offer him a maximum contract worth between $90 and $100 million. No other team can offer more than five years.

Arenas told The Washington Post, “It’s just business. If something happens where they don’t want me or they’re going in a different direction, I can look elsewhere. But my intentions are not to leave.”

However, he also told The Washington Times that he wanted to test the market and consider other teams. He remains tight with ex-Wizard guard Larry Hughes, now playing with Cleveland.

The Wizards could always sign him, or use him in a sign-and-trade if he wants to leave. Arenas is considered an elite scorer, but his defense, or lack thereof, has stunted Washington’s overall development. However, he remains an integral part of what the Wizards want to do.

“Gilbert has made a significant impact with his exploits on the court and a sincere connection with our fans and community because of his compassion and generosity,” Grunfeld said.
