Fight for your right to roster spot

This isn’t some symbolic response to the Redskins drafting three receivers. Terrence Austin knows he will have to fight his way back on the roster this season.

But taking up boxing lessons wasn’t his way to send that message. What he wants is to increase his cardiovascular workouts and speed up his hands.

“It was something I was interested in a while ago,” Austin said. “I did a little bit of Jiu Jitsu coming up, and I got away from it. Now I found with more time it can’t hurt you.”

Austin is small, listed at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds — though he said he’s added around eight pounds in recent weeks. But he has quick feet, which help him get off the line, and wants his hands to move faster, too.

“They teach you how to use your hands to get the most out of it with less effort,” he said. “Now that I learn it more, I’m more efficient with my hands. It will definitely show on the field.”
