D.C. United was good — very good — in the first half-hour of tonight’s 5-3 whipping of New York. But with 20 of the 22 starters being different than who these two teams put out last weekend in league play, let’s look at who started tonight on the benches. First, the Red Bulls: Kevin Goldthwaite, Mac Kandji, Jorge Rojas and Sinisa Ubiparipovic. Next, D.C. United: Marc Burch, Andrew Jacobson, Jaime Moreno, Santino Quaranta, Rodney Wallace. New York got better when it used its four subs, but it was already too late. DCU didn’t even have to use Quaranta or Moreno and got out of the night with just a half for Christian Gómez.
Now, we know I’m no expert on New York, but that’s the difference between depth and no depth.
