Redskins sign punter Bidwell

Former Pro Bowler has a 42.8-yard average

The Redskins performed what seems to be an annual rite of spring on Tuesday. They signed a punter, continuing a quest to provide stability at this position.

Now it’s Josh Bidwell’s turn to be more than just a short-term answer.

Washington hasn’t had stability in a long time at this spot as it has gone through six punters in the past two seasons and 16 since 2000. Derrick Frost served as the primary punter from 2005-07, but was hardly a Pro Bowler.

Bidwell, 34, missed last season after undergoing surgery on his hip during training camp. At the time doctors and Tampa Bay officials said he would be as good as new once he finished his rehabilitation.

He has a career 42.8-yard average and made the Pro Bowl in 2005. In 2008, Bidwell averaged 44.5 yards per punt for Tampa Bay, when current Redskins GM Bruce Allen held the same position with the Bucs. Bidwell also can hold on field goals and extra points.

Hunter Smith punted for the Redskins last season, but leg injuries cost him three games and diminished his effectiveness in others. Smith averaged 41.3 yards per punt.
