The Redskins will attend Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor’s workout Friday, according to a team source. Pryor is likely one of three players who will be eligible for the Aug. 17 supplemental draft, along with Georgia running back Caleb King and North Carolina defensive end Michael McAdoo. Here’s a good look at all three players.
Pryor, who still doesn’t know if he will be eligible, will conduct the workout in the Pittsburgh area, where he’s from.
Don’t get too caught up in the fact that they will attend Pryor’s workout (at least not yet). They scouted many of the quarterbacks leading up to the April draft. Had Pryor made himself eligible for that draft, they would have scouted him then too. It doesn’t mean they will draft him. A number of teams are expected to attend.
The draft works like this: teams submit bids on where they want to draft a player. If they get the player, they forfeit that pick in the 2012 draft. The Redskins picked defensive lineman Jeremy Jarmon in the third round of the supplemental draft two years ago.
This is what one executive told me about Pryor in June: “He’s not a well-liked kid. Very self-absorbed. He doesn’t have the leadership you want in a quarterback. I’ve got more issues with that than his arm.”
ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Todd McShay both say Pryor’s future is at tight end or receiver. The executive isn’t sold on that.
“Could he switch? Yeah, he’s a big athletic fast man and he has great speed,” he said. “But I wouldn’t take him with that understanding. You start with Cam Newton and you look at Christian Ponder and [Jake] Locker and you can make a case for Pryor. He has special skills too. If he had another year I know he would look better and more polished and poised in the pocket. He’s not that far off those guys. You want to look at him as a quarterback….To project a player to another position is hard to do.”
The 2012 quarterback class is expected to be a strong one, with possibly three worthy of being top-10 selections.
