Eagles, Tillery find their first win of the season

Bad times have infected their boys basketball program like the flu in recent years. Thanks in part to a more disciplined approach by first-year head coach Alexander Mattison, the attitude around the Frederick Douglass basketball team has changed.

And for the first time all season, those efforts bore fruit for the Eagles, who earned their first win of the season in a 69-61 victory over Stafford in a consolation game at the Hubert Davis Tournament of Champions at Lake Braddock.

Douglass (1-6) plays KIMA at 4 p.m. today in the consolation championship game to determine fifth place in the tournament.

“This is just one win, but it shows us what this team is all about,” said Eagles senior forward Chris Tillery, who scored a game-high 24 points “This season isn’t over yet. We’ve lost some close games and games we could have won. It’s tough, but we won’t roll over.”
