THREE KEYS TO A RAVENS’ VICTORY
1. Contain Peyton Manning. The future Hall of Fame quarterback is off to a slow start because he missed the preseason after having an infected bursa sac removed from his left knee. But he has slowly rounded into form as he has completed 96-of-154 passes for 1,031 yards, with five touchdowns and five interceptions. Manning threw two touchdown passes in the final four minutes, four seconds in a 31-27 victory over Houston last week. The Colts are as one-dimensional through the air as the Ravens are on the ground. Indianapolis averages a league-worst 67.8 rushing yards per game. But the Colts have the seventh-ranked passing attack, averaging 245.5 yards per game.
2. Run the football effectively. The Colts’ defense is not the same without Pro Bowl safety Bob Sanders, who is out with a high right ankle sprain. Indianapolis is last in the league against the run, allowing an average of 188.5 yards per game. The Ravens are fourth in rushing offense (153.8 ypg), led by fullback Le’Ron McClain (266 yards, 4 TDs) and running back Willis McGahee (170 yards, 1 TD). It will be imperative the Ravens control the clock by sustaining drives, as they are 14-of-19 when they are faced four yards or fewer on third down.
3. Avoid the costly mistake. The Ravens are just a few plays away from being 4-0 this season after leading in the second half of consecutive losses to Tennessee and Pittsburgh. The Ravens’ game against the Colts last year got out of hand in a hurry, as they committed five turnovers and trailed 23-0 after the first quarter en route to a 44-20 loss. The Ravens, however, are 42-0 since 2000 when they commit at least two few turnovers than the opposition, but 8-45 when they lost the turnover battle. The Ravens have allowed just three plays of at least 25 yards after giving up 11 through four games last season.
KEY MATCHUPS
LT JARED GAITHER vs. DE DWIGHT FREENEY
The 6-foot-9 330 pounder is part of a unit that has allowed just six sacks this season, which is tied for fourth-fewest in the league.
The 6-foot-1, 286-pounder still is one of the league’s premier pass rushers, as he has three sacks this season.
CB CHRIS MCALISTER vs. WR REGGIE WAYNE
the 6-foot-1, 210-pounder is tied for second in the NFL with three interceptions. The Ravens are 17-6 when McAlister makes interceptions.
The 6-foot, 198-pounder leads the Colts with 25 receptions for 350 yards and 3 TDs. He had the game-winning score last week at the Texans.
LB RAY LEWIS vs. QB PEYTON MANNING
the 6-foot-1, 250-pounder has a team-high 42 tackles, including 23 unassisted. He anchors a unit that ranks first in rushing, passing and total defense.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder is fourth all-time in career touchdowns (311) and ninth all-time in career passing yards (42,657).
STATE OF THE TEAMS
The Ravens (2-2) are coming off consecutive three-point losses, including a 13-10 setback to the Tennessee Titans last week. But the Ravens will remain competitive if their vaunted defense plays well. Baltimore is 0-3 all-time in Indianapolis and has lost its past five games against the Colts.
The Colts (2-2) could easily be winless right now if not for late comeback wins over the Texans and Vikings. Indianapolis is off to an uncharacteristically slow start after going 18-2 in September the previous eight seasons. The Colts still are great offensive with quarterback Peyton Manning, wide receiver Reggie Wayne and running back Joseph Addai. The Colts’ defense, however, hasn’t played well for an entire game.
THE EXAMINER PREDICTS …
This game will come down to whether the Ravens can stop quarterback Peyton Manning and whether the Colts can stop the Ravens’ rushing attack. The Ravens’ secondary really hasn’t been tested this year, which likely will lead to it getting exposed at Lucas Oil Stadium.
