Baltimore Ravens training camp welcomes Lorenzo Neal

STAR OF THE DAY

Lorenzo Neal

The 37-year-old joined his seventh team on Tuesday when the fullback signed a one-year deal with the Ravens. He practiced on Wednesday and looked to be in good shape as he helped block and made a couple of catches during the morning workout in Westminster.

PLAY OF THE DAY

Marcus Smith

The rookie receiver continues to be on of the biggest surprises of training camp. The fourth-round pick from New Mexico leaped in the left corner of the end zone and turned a near interception by cornerback Ronnie Prude into a touchdown on a pass by quarterback Kyle Boller

YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN

With injuries to starting cornerbacks Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle, the Ravens were down to three healthy cornerbacks on Wednesday. It got so bad that wide receiver Mark Clayton was forced to be the team’s nickel back on a few occasions.

“It is a concern,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “Those guys are all close to coming back. So you’re not going to make a change. It’s not really a situation where you can bring another guy in. You just have to work through it.”

QUARTERBACK BATTLE

Troy Smith started out with the first team and made some decent throws, especially early, but was not helped by consecutive dropped balls by Clayton on what would have been long completions. Boller was steady and made mostly short to intermediate throws on completions to fullback Le’Ron McClain and receiver Derrick Mason. Boller also threw a touchdown during a seven-on-seven drill to wideout Justin Harper. As training camp begins to wind down, Joe Flacco has taken fewer and fewer snaps in practice and appears more likely to open the season as the third quarterback.

TRAINING CAMP GUIDE

The Ravens conclude their portion of training camp at McDaniel College on Thursday with a two-hour practice beginning at 8:45 a.m. and a 90-minute session starting at 2:45 p.m. Please check their Web site, as times are subject to change.

Directions: From I-695, take Exit 19 onto I-795 North. Follow signs to Westminster via Route 140 West to Route 31. At blinking light, turn left onto Route 31. At first traffic light, turn left onto Main Street. Proceed up hill, and the entrance to the Ravens’ visitor parking is on the left.

Parking: Visitors are encouraged to park at McDaniel College’s Bair Stadium, which is adjacent to Main Street.

Autograph alert: The Ravens make most of their players accessible for autographs after each practice, with fans asked to lineup next to the fences and ropes surrounding the field. Kids 14 years and younger can get prime spots behind the end zone closest to the field house. Players are more likely to sign autographs for kids who are polite and bring a pen.

STOCK MARKET

RISING

Le’Ron McClain

The second-year fullback from Alabama had a rough start to camp as he arrived out of shape after becoming a dad for the second time. But he’s played very well in the past week and will compete with recently signed Lorenzo Neal for the starting job.

FALLING

Ronnie Prude

The third-year cornerback from LSU struggled on Wednesday, as he allowed rookie receivers Justin Harper and Marcus Smith to catch touchdown passes from Kyle Boller. It is imperative Prude plays well in preseason games if he’s to earn a job on a team that’s loaded with cornerbacks.
