Upon further review: Woods’ first round

Tiger Woods shot his best opening round ever at Augusta (68). So where are those folks who cast so much doubt that Woods could win coming off a five-month layoff? Those from that camp cited Woods’ work ethic, saying he was incapable of winning after a long period of inactivity. But that’s underestimating Woods’ most obvious gift — his overwhelming talent edge.

Woods 68 could have easily been a 64. He actually struggled on the greens, taking 31 putts. Only 16 players had more. “Unfortunately I didn’t putt too well today,” said Woods. “It could have been a pretty special round.”

Woods played Augusta’s four par-five holes in 5-under-par. It was his first round at Augusta with a pair of eagles. He made 10-footers for eagle at No. 8 and No. 13. He also eagled No. 8 in the final round in 2009.

Woods said he didn’t see the plane that flew over Augusta National, just as he was teeing off on the first hole, with a trailing sign that read: “Tiger did you mean Bootyism?”
