He?s as flashy on the field as he is soft-spoken off of it.
Navy junior slotback Reggie Campbell enters this season coming off one of the greatest bowl game performances in college football history after tying an NCAA record with five touchdowns in the Midshipmen?s 51-30 win over Colorado State in the Poinsettia Bowl.
Even after gaining that national attention, Campbell remains grounded and modest about his individual play. Instead, he prefers to laud his offensive line and work toward winning a fourth straight Commander-in-Chief Trophy.
“We?ve been in East Carolina mode since preseason camp began,” said Campbell, referring to Navy?s season opener on Saturday. “I try not to dwell too much on the bowl game because that over with and it?s time to move forward.”
The rest of the country may have only seen the 5-foot-6, 165-pound Campbell for the first time during the bowl win last year, but Navy has known it has an explosive football player for awhile.
“Reggie?s a good football player,” Navy coach Paul Johnson said. “He works hard every day. He practices hard. He has all kinds of skills. He?s good with the ball, and he?s good without the ball. He can catch it, he can run, he can return kicks ? he?s just a very valuable guy on the team. He?s a really good player.”
