Who says that August is a slow month? Washington has seen a handful of celebs out and about in recent days and we’ve got the rundown:
The most notable visit was the surprise White House trip made Monday by teen pop sensations The Jonas Brothers.
The group — Nick, Kevin and Joe — was in town to do their part in the fight against diabetes (Nick was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 13). They headed to the White House at 10 am for a private policy briefing on diabetes, and then went to the press briefing room where an eager Fourth Estate strained their necks to get a view. The brothers also did their part to add to the press briefing room’s celeb appeal: They, like other celebrity visitors to the briefing room, signed some of the tiles from the White House’s original pool (above which the briefing room now stands).
Next, it was off to the White House’s South Lawn to film a public service announcement with Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne. The PSA stressed more activity amongst American kids and urged them to visit America’s national parks. And proving that even teeny boppers aren’t too jaded to meet with Darth Vader himself, the Jonas Brothers actually spent some time with Vice President Dick Cheney during their visit.
Then, the gang headed to Madame Tussauds in Penn Quarter to unveil their wax replicas at the museum.
But if you weren’t lucky enough to see the Jonas Brothers at the White House, you might have seen them flying in and out of Dulles airport in their own Gulfstream private jet. Or dining at La Madeleine in Georgetown on Sunday before browsing the book shelves in the nearby Barnes & Nobles. Or catching some Zzzzs at the Four Seasons.
Also at the Four Seasons over the weekend: The Black Crowes. The Beach Boys. Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder stayed at the Georgetown Ritz Carlton.
Speaking of Vedder: If you were paying attention on Saturday, you might have spotted the rock star paddle surfing down the Potomac River. He told the crowd gathered on Sunday at the Warner Theatre for his solo performance that he was especially moved when, from the river, a bald eagle lined up perfectly in his line of sight with the Washington Monument. “That’s the good type of patriotism,” the notorious Bush basher said.
And lastly (just barely making the grade…): That was CBS soap opera “As The World Turns” filming at the Willard Hotel over the weekend.
