Obama’s HQ
To hear Mayor Adrian Fenty tell it, John McCain’s request to postpone tonight’s debate is playing right into Barack Obama’s hands.
“I just love the way the last 24 hours has gone,” said Fenty. “I love that they’re trying to distract our leader, and he’s saying, ‘No.'”
Fenty spoke at the opening of Obama’s new D.C. headquarters (better late than never, right?), which occupies a nondescript rowhouse on Florida Avenue.
Before Fenty’s arrival, a few organizers gamely tried to lead the crowd of 200 or so in chants of “O-ba-ma!” but they soon fizzled out, much like the cheers at Nationals Park. Not until Councilmember Kwame Brown, and then Fenty, took the mic, did the supporters resemble a Redskins crowd, joining in with loud chants of “All fired up!” and “America! Obama!”
And just like that … the event was over. “We’re moving so fast, we’re not even cutting any ribbons,” said a temporarily confused Fenty as he left the podium.
