Tricks of the trade

Who says you can never go home again?

In the Bill Belichick era in New England, every player is considered replaceable. In other words, if you don’t buy in, the Patriots will ship you out.

Randy Moss found that out after making an out-of-the-blue comment following the Patriots’ Week 1 win — yes, a win — against the Bengals. He said that he felt “underappreciated” since he had not yet been contacted about a new contract. It was reported that he asked for a trade at that time.

Now he has been shipped from a 3-1 team to the 1-2 Vikings.

But does that mean he’s going from a playoff team to a dud?

The Vikings traded away Moss once, sending him away for two unproductive seasons in Oakland. He’s returning after three consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns in Foxborough but has registered just 139 yards in four games this year.

That’s not exactly straight cash, homie.

But he is going to a team that’s starved for a big-play receiver — well honestly, it needs anyone who can catch a ball — with a gunslinger quarterback who has not looked like his old self. In addition, the loss of Sydney Rice to injury and Percy Harvin‘s migraine/hip issues have left the Minnesota passing attack ineffective.

And what about Brett Favre? We all know it comes back to No. 4 somehow.

When Favre was in Green Bay, he had campaigned twice to trade for Moss. Did he have something to do with a trade going down? Who really knows, but can we really believe that Favre wouldn’t have been lobbying a third time to get Moss on his team?

But now that Favre has Moss, will that change the Vikings’ fortunes?

No one knows for sure, but now we do know why the NFL scheduled the Vikings at the Patriots for Halloween night.

Moss will be dressing up in his own throwback uniform, and his hoodie-wearing former coach will surely have plenty of tricks ready at every turn.
