Bears get heavenly win against Blue Demons

Morgan State coach Todd Bozeman may soon petition to have his team’s home games moved to Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.

Following a 79-75 upset of DePaul, the Bears’ first victory against a Big East school, he improved his career record to 3-0 at the venue.

“It was familiar to me because when I was coaching at Cal we won two games there in the NCAA Tournament in 1993,” he said. “I’m still undefeated in that arena.”

The Bears (4-6) picked up one of the biggest wins in program history by rallying from a 10-point second half deficit to stun the Blue Demons (4-3). Morgan State struggled to close out wins on the road for much of the season, losing 64-61 at LaSalle (4-3), 61-60 at Manhattan (4-3) and 78-70 at Ole Miss (6-2). But against DePaul, the Bears finished strong, as they yielded only two field goals in the final 12 minutes of the game.

Morgan State has a 15-day layoff before flying to Moraga, Calif., on Dec. 27 for the St. Mary’s Tournament against William Jessup (3-7), San Jose State (3-3) and the Gaels (6-1).

“It makes the holidays better when you go in off a big victory,” Bozeman said. “But it’s now a matter of keeping the focus and

continuing to take positive steps.”

Retrievers trim rotation, increase wins

UMBC forward Darryl Proctor knows how to celebrate a milestone.

He posted his 32nd career double-double in his 100th game at UMBC in a recent 67-56 win over Central Connecticut State. Proctor finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds as UMBC (5-3) used just six players. The Retrievers play at third-ranked Pittsburgh (9-0) on Saturday night at 7 on MASN.

Eagles still learning to fly

Coppin State senior guard and NBA draft prospect Tywain McKee acknowledged the Eagles still have plenty of growing pains following a 73-70 loss at Loyola.

“It’s tough because last year we had so many seniors they just knew what to do,” he said. “This year they are still learning but they will be all right.”

The Eagles (1-5) next game is on Saturday night at Dayton (8-1).

“It’s not the Tywain McKee show,” Coppin State coach Ron “Fang” Mitchell said. “He needs help too.”
