One more round of Jerrygate — Did he or didn’t he? Interview, that is. But he still won’t answer any questions on the matter. Actually, he probably handled it better today than he has in the past, mostly saying, “That’s a great question. No comment.” Or, “I appreciate the question, but I can’t comment right now.” In the past he was vague or offered conflicting statements. Or he’d say he hadn’t interviewed when too many others said he had.

Had he handled it this way in the beginning, there would have been frustration, but no confusion.

As for his relationship with Jim Zorn, he said, “We have a good relationship. I did pick him up last Saturday ont he way to the hotel like we always do. If the relationship was kind of bad, he would have told me, ‘No, Jerry, don’t come this week.’ ”

…DeAngelo Hall on Gray, “One of the reasons for me coming to Washington was to learn from Jerry Gray. He’s beena  big help for me. He’s a great coach and if hemoves up, whether it’s here or somewhere else, I wish him the best.”

Guessing there were a few other reasons aside from Gray that lured Hall. But the point is valid: the defensive backs like him.

…Kareem Moore will start at free safety and if LaRon Landry can’t play, then Fred Smoot is the likely starter. He’ll be used in a role similar to Shawn Springs when he would move to safety. They might suffer against the run — though San Diego has not run well this year — but Smoot’s coverage skill should help.

Smoot has become more physical over the years, but he’s still not in Springs’ category in that regard. It’ll be hard to have an extra safety against the run.

…Edwin Williams received the bulk of the work at right guard today, ahead of Paul Fanaika and Will Montgomery. Zorn said he’s still not sure who will start.

…Zorn had the quickest press conference of his tenure; today’s briefing lasted just two minutes and 45 seconds. Really, at this point, there’s not much left to ask. And despite what Zorn is saying publicly about wanting to return, he knows his fate.

…Defensive end Andre Carter received the Redskins Media Good Guy Award, given to the player who helps the media most. Five other players received votes. Other past winners still on the roster include: London Fletcher, Jason Campbell, Santana Moss, Fred Smoot, Renaldo Wynn and Phillip Daniels. Carter was available win or lose after games and for a few years had to answer tough questions about his productivity. But he answers the questions the same way, with class.
