Joe Monte began his championship junior season at Chantilly High with a runner-up finish at the prestigious Junior PGA Championship last August in Westfield, Ohio. Just two months later, he proved to be the best high school golfer in Virginia by winning the Group AAA state tournament.
Monte has set himself up for another monster season after winning the Junior PGA on Sunday. But it won’t be with the Chargers.
Monte, who shot a career-low 64 to win the Junior PGA title, is moving to Orlando, Fla., where he will attend a private Christian school. Monte will rejoin swing coach Tom Buckley, a former club professional at Brambleton Golf Course in Ashburn, Va., who retired recently and moved to the Orlando area.
“It’s terrible for us, but such a great opportunity for Joe,” said former Chantilly coach Jim McGraw, who retired in June but will still act as a volunteer assistant for the Chargers.
Monte was named The Examiner’s Golfer of the Year in Virginia as a junior. By winning the Junior PGA, an invite-only event featuring 78 of the top youth golfers in the nation, Monte earned one of six coveted spots on the six-man United States Junior Ryder Cup team, which travels to Wales next month for that event.
Noyes steps down at Woodson
W.T. Woodson High boys soccer coach David Noyes has resigned after one year with the program.
Noyes, who took over for the school’s longtime head coach Richard Broad prior to last season, led the Cavaliers to the Northern Region tournament championship and the Group AAA state semifinals in 2006. Woodson finished 15-5, ending its season with a 15-5 loss to Gar-Field. According to Woodson activities director Dan Checkosky, Noyes has taken an assistant coaching position at Division III Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I.
