Player of the Year

Carter Foote

St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes, sr., midfielder

Foote, a two-time All-Examiner choice headed to Vanderbilt, helped St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (17-1) to its 12th consecutive Independent Schools League championship. She registered 62 points for the Saints (51 goals, 11 assists) and was one of just three players from the Washington, D.C. area chosen for the prestigious All-Tewaaraton team, a selection of the top 12 high school girls lacrosse players in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Foote posted a team-high 60 draw controls, forced 14 turnovers and recorded 36 ground balls.

Coach of the Year

Jean Counts, Oakton

She was as much psychologist as coach, hoping to convince her talented team it could win important postseason games. That was no easy task for Counts, whose squad sought answers after an overtime loss to Robinson in the Northern Region final on May 24 – its third straight region runner-up finish. But Oakton (17-3), the Concorde District champ, avenged that region final loss with a 9-5 victory over Robinson on June 3 in the first Group AAA state championship game.

First team

Katherine Denkler

St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes, jr., attack

One of the top juniors in the country, Denkler led the ISL-champion Saints with a team-high 56 goals, including six in the ISL final against Stone Ridge. She also finished with a team-best 68 points and 44 ground balls and was second to All-Examiner teammate Carter Foote with 30 draw controls.

Kate Fauth

St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes, sr., attack

A team captain along with All-Examiner teammate Carter Foote, Fauth scored 32 goals for the Saints, including three in the ISL final against Stone Ridge, and added 21 assists to total 53 points. Fauth, who also won 21 draw controls and picked up 22 ground balls, will play at Dartmouth.

Ansley Stewart

Episcopal, jr., attack

A first-team All-ISL and All-VIS selection, Stewart led the Maroon to the inaugural VIS state championship with six goals in the final against Collegiate, a 13-12 victory. Stewart was one of three Episcopal players to score at least 40 goals. She led the Maroon (17-3) in goals (61), assists (70) and points (131).

Sara Morse

Langley, jr., attack

Morse was a huge part of Langley’s first Liberty District championship since 1998. The Saxons, who reached the Northern Region quarterfinals before losing to Loudoun Valley, finished with a 12-4 record. Morse scored a team-high 43 goals and was the Liberty District player of the year.

Katie Delaney

Robinson, sr., attack

An offensive force at attack for the Northern Region champion Rams. The speedy Delaney, a two-time All-Examiner selection, scored 36 goals and added a team-high 47 assists, earning first-team All-Northern Region honors. She will play at William & Mary.

Molly Millard

St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes, jr., midfielder

A primary scoring threat for the ISL champion Saints with a team-high 34 assists. Millard was one of three St. Stephen’s players to register at least 60 points. She also scored 26 goals, including three each in the ISL final and the season-ending loss to nationally ranked Moorestown (N.J.).

Natalie West

Lake Braddock, jr., midfielder

A two-time All-Examiner pick, West helped Lake Braddock to a 14-2 record and a Patriot District championship. The Bruins’ lone losses were to Northern Region champion Robinson. West scored 41 goals and recorded 48 ground balls en route to district player of the year honors.

Alex Breiner

O’Connell, jr., midfielder

The most dynamic scorer in Northern Virginia, Breiner led the resurgent Knights with 91 goals and 35 assists. She earned first-team All-WCAC honors and helped O’Connell to a 12-6 record and a spot in the WCAC semifinals, where they lost to eventual champion Good Counsel.

Reid Cifrino

Yorktown, jr., midfielder

The National District player of the year helped Yorktown (16-4) to the program record for wins and its first district title. The Patriots also reached the Northern Region semifinals. Cifrino scored 54 goals and 13 assists and recorded 36 ground balls. She also won 46 draw controls and forced 21 turnovers.

Ashley Kimener

Oakton, so., midfielder

First-team All-Northern Region choice scored 44 goals and added 20 assists for Oakton, which won Concorde District and Group AAA state championships. Kimener recorded 45 ground balls and won 39 draw controls. She also forced 23 turnovers and made 12 interceptions.

Mia Breheny

Ireton, sr., midfielder

Returned from a knee injury that wiped out much of her junior year to lead Ireton to an 11-10 record and an appearance in the WCAC championship game. Breheny, a two-time first-team All-WCAC, scored a team-high 83 goals and added 24 assists for the Cardinals. She will play at George Washington.

Mary Dunleavy

Robinson, sr., midfielder

The Concorde District and Northern Region player of the year led Robinson with a team-high 50 goals and 30 assists. She also totaled 83 ground balls, won 40 draw controls and forced 20 turnovers for the Rams, who won the Northern Region championship. Will play at Virginia Tech.

Katie Moran

Oakton, senior, defender

A player the Cougars counted on all over the field. Often asked to cover the opposition’s top scorer, Moran still contributed 22 goals and seven assists on the offensive end. She finished with 57 ground balls and 34 draw controls and forced 28 turnovers. Will play field hockey at Penn.

Marie Pierce

Annandale, senior, defender

Pierce and the Atoms finished 13-6 and set the program record for most wins in a season before losing to Oakton in the Northern Region quarterfinals. She anchored an Annandale defense that limited opponents to five goals or less 11 times. Pierce, who will play at Christopher Newport, finished with 55 caused turnovers and 61 ground balls.

Ashley Walsh

Lake Braddock, senior, goalie

Three-year starter and a first-team All-Northern Region selection will play at Robert Morris. She averaged nine saves per game and helped the Bruins to the Northern Region quarterfinals. Walsh stopped 70 percent of the shots she faced and finished with a career record of 29-8.
