Morgan State men?s basketball coach Todd Bozeman was charged with misdemeanor assault after an argument with a restaurant employee following a close loss to non-conference Longwood in Farmville, Va., over the weekend.
Police were called to Mulligan?s restaurant near the Longwood campus Saturday after Bozeman arrived to pick up dinner for the team, according to restaurant manager Carlos Holland.
“They put in an order for 52 cheesesteak sandwiches,” Holland said. “We could not do the sandwiches they requested, and we told the assistant coach this and he said it was fine. I delivered the sandwiches. About two minutes later, he [Bozeman] came in the restaurant yelling, ?I want my [expletive] money back.? I had 15 families in here eating, and he is yelling, ?[Expletive] you guys for trying to get me. [Expletive] you country bumpkins.?”
Attempts to reach Bozeman on his cell phone and through the university Monday were unsuccessful.
Holland said the police came and calmed Bozeman down. Holland said that Bozeman paid for the breakfast they ate earlier, and the restaurant refunded the money for the sandwiches.
“It was a bad situation,” Holland said. “These little children had to witness this. … I think we could have handled this better than it came out. The way he managed it was horrible.”
Farmville police Capt. Wade Stimpson said while a warrant has been issued against Bozeman, there are no immediate plans of having him extradited to Virginia.
“I would be surprised if he were extradited,” Stimpson said. “We?re not planning on coming to Baltimore anytime soon. But if he were in the area, got stopped for speeding or something else and [an officer] checked his ID, they would see that there is a warrant on file.”
Morgan State blew a 10-point second-half lead and lost to Longwood, 75-73, at the buzzer. The Bears (8-12) returned to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play last night at first-place Delaware State in a game that ended too late for this edition. This season is Bozeman?s first at the college level in a decade after he was fired as California?s head coach for offering payments to a player in violation of NCAA rules.
